Seven regions to very serious, highest risk level for corona

The number of new corona cases continues to rise, which is why so-called risk levels are also rising. On the new map of the Netherlands that the government will adopt on Tuesday, seven regions will go to the highest level (very serious) and thirteen to the second highest level (severe).

The Netherlands has four risk levels for the corona virus. From lowest to highest, these are vigilant, worrisome, serious and very serious. Currently ten regions are at the lowest level, vigilant, and the other fifteen regions are a step up, at worrisome. Two numbers determine the level of risk in a region: the number of positive tests and the number of hospitalizations. The number of inhabitants is taken into account. The number of hospital admissions is fairly stable for the time being, but the number of new cases is increasing, and the higher of the two determines the level of risk.

Amsterdam-Amstelland is one of the biggest fires. Last week, 541.5 out of every 100,000 people tested positive there. On Sunday, the region recorded a nationwide record of more than 1,600 positive tests in 24 hours. In the municipality of Amsterdam itself, 1 in every 183 residents was told last week that he or she had the corona virus. At the end of June, in the week before the cafes and discos were allowed to open again, one in every 3,096 Amsterdammers tested positive.

In the municipality of Groningen, the corona virus was even diagnosed in 1 in every 108 people last week. In the week before the last relaxation, this happened to 1 in every 6173 Stadjers. That’s a 5620 percent increase in about two weeks.

With all these new cases, Amsterdam-Amstelland and the Groningen region are becoming very serious, as are the regions of Utrecht, Rotterdam-Rijnmond, Kennemerland, Gooi en Vechtstreek and Hollands Midden.

The thirteen regions that will be labeled ‘severe’, one step below, are Haaglanden, Twente, Central and West Brabant, Zaanstreek-Waterland, Brabant-Southeast, Gelderland-South, North and East Gelderland, IJsselland, Gelderland -Middle, South Holland South, North Holland North, Brabant North and Friesland. The other regions, which are given the status of concern, are Flevoland, South Limburg, Drenthe, North Limburg and Zeeland.

On Thursday, the European health service ECDC will also release a new corona card. The Netherlands is still largely orange on this, with some green areas here and there thanks to the corona weather that ended more than a week ago. On the new map of the corona outbreak in Europe, North Holland, South Holland, Utrecht and Groningen will probably turn red. As a result of that card, other countries can advise their citizens against coming to the Netherlands, and they can set strict conditions for Dutch people who want to come and celebrate a holiday.
