Seven activists were arrested on Friday evening during the occupation of a restaurant in central Utrecht. The group campaigned in a business on the Lijnmarkt because foie gras is on the menu.
Foie gras is the fatty liver of ducks or geese. The animals are fattened in a short time using a funnel or tube. In the Netherlands, this is seen as animal suffering and is prohibited.
The activists began what they called a “playful occupation” at around 7pm. They refused to leave until foie gras disappeared from the menu.
Six activists were arrested for refusing to leave the restaurant. Two of them had chained themselves and had to be released by the police. An activist was arrested because he could not identify himself.
A restaurant guest suffered a leg injury in the action. He slipped on leaflets distributed by activists and then had to go to the hospital. The action ended around 9.30pm, police said.
