Six people were killed in the city center of Myaing when troops opened fire on the protests. This was revealed by a man who took part in the demonstration and helped carry the bodies to the hospital. A health officer there confirmed the six victims were killed.
“We are protesting peacefully,” said the 31-year-old. “I do not believe they did it,” he was quoted as saying Reuters, Thursday (11/3/2021).
Local media reported that one person was killed in the North Dagon district of Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city. Photos posted on Facebook show a man lying face down on the street, bleeding from a head wound.
Protests were also staged in half a dozen other cities, according to the post on Facebook.
Overnight, people opposed candlelight curfews in parts of Yangon as well as in Myingyan, southwest of Mandalay’s second city.
Before the latest casualties, the advocacy group Association of Assistance for Political Prisoners said more than 60 protesters had been killed and some 2,000 were detained by security forces since the February 1 coup against the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.
