A Lufthansa Airbus 330, which had taken off from Texas bound for Germany, suffered violent turbulence, causing panic and several injuries.
A Lufthansa airliner suffered severe turbulence as it flew over the state of Tennessee in the east-central United States. At least seven passengers were slightly injured, after being struck by thrown objects in the cabin.
The incident happened overnight from Thursday to Friday. Flight 469 had taken off from Austin, Texas, and was heading to Frankfurt, Germany. The “significant” turbulence occurred an hour and a half after the start of the flight, while the Airbus 330 was at an altitude of approximately 11,000 meters.
According to passenger reports, the surprise movement happened after meal service was served, so hardly anyone had buckled their seat belts. There was also no indication to remain seated in his seat, and several passengers were in the lavatory.
“It was like an unexpected free fall for five seconds from the top of a roller coaster, the plates and glasses were on the ceiling, and my bag, which was on the floor, flew behind me to the right,” a passenger told CNN.
The incident forced the pilot to divert his course to Virginia and make an emergency landing at Washington Dulles International Airport.
The company said it was a “clear air turbulence” event. a type of atmospheric disturbance that can occur without being associated with severe or visible phenomena, such as thunderstorms.
The injured people received immediate assistance before landing. Once on the ground, 7 passengers were taken to hospital and 12 others received treatment at the airport.
