Seven Injured in Bronx Apartment Fire Caused by Space Heater: FDNY Urges Safety Measures

Seven people were injured in a fire that broke out in the kitchen of an apartment in a 16-story building in the Bronx. Apparently it happened because of a space heater.

The New York Fire Department (FDNY) received the emergency call, around 7:30 a.m. this Monday, going to 2000 Valentine Avenue.

Despite their quick action, firefighters battled the fire for more than five hours on the fourth floor of the building.

Our reporter Mariela Salgado, from Univision 41, went to the scene of the fire and found that after several hours, the windows of the apartment were covered, a sign that the flames were under control.

“You always have to be checking, I do it every night, you never know, the cables, plugs, that’s what causes problems,” said a neighbor, regarding the possibility that a heater may have started the fire.

FDNY Guide to Using Heaters at Home

Do not connect it to a cord or extension cord Place the heater at least three feet from flammable items The heater should always be on the floor, never on a table or piece of furniture Move blankets, curtains, newspapers and other objects away from the heater that could ignite

It is also essential that you verify the operation of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, renewing the batteries. Also, always keep an escape plan that your entire family knows.
