Seven deaths have been reported in the eastern part of the Indonesian island of Java after an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck off the coast on Saturday. Two people were seriously injured, reports the disaster relief agency BNPB. According to eyewitnesses, there would also be a lot of damage to buildings.
According to the BNPB, there is still damage to about three hundred buildings, including schools, hospitals and government buildings. An unknown number of people have been evacuated from villages after their homes collapsed.
The authorities warn that the number of deaths and injuries could increase once more becomes clear about the handling of the disaster. An earthquake of comparable magnitude on the island of Sulawesi killed more than 100 people last January.
