Seven bodies found after severe French-Italian border region | Abroad

Italian authorities reported two dead and nine missing on Saturday after torrential rains and high winds created emergency situations. Two people killed were discovered on the French side of the border on Sunday, among them a missing shepherd. An Italian rescue team deposited his remains. The other fatality was in a car that was swept along by the churning water in Saint-Martin-Vésubie.

The official death toll from the storm is now at nine. French rescue workers are still looking for 21 people who are listed as missing. It has been established that eight of them disappeared as a direct result of the storm. That caused millions of euros in damage. In Italy, several roads and bridges were destroyed by landslides. In some places the streets are full of rubble, mud and car wrecks.

In Sambughetto, not far from the Swiss border, 630 millimeters of rain fell in 24 hours. That is more than half the amount that normally falls in a year. In Limone Piemonte, near the French border, a three-story house collapsed into a river. In the village of Tanaro, high water destroyed a graveyard, bringing up and carrying dozens of coffins.
