A court document showed on Saturday that US District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan set August 16 as the date for former President Donald Trump’s pre-trial hearing in the criminal case related to his attempt to to challenge him in the 2020 presidential elections in violation of the law.
Chutkan’s decision comes a day after she regained jurisdiction in the case, which had been suspended for nearly eight months, to allow Trump to get a ruling on presidential immunity.
The judge is expected to decide in the coming weeks what will be removed from the indictment filed by Special Counsel Jack Smith after the Supreme Court ruled that former presidents have broad immunity from performing official acts while in office.
Trump had pleaded not guilty to four charges of conspiracy aimed at reversing his loss in the 2020 election.
Chutkan, in a legal document released on Saturday, said Trump would not be required to appear before the court to attend this meeting related to discussing aspects of the case. All parties have been asked to propose a timetable for pre-trial proceedings by August 9.
Chutkan rejected Trump’s appeal that he filed last October to drop the charges against him.
She said Trump would be able to reapply after all immunity issues are decided.
After the decision of the US Supreme Court issued on July 1, which granted Trump immunity from prosecution for any actions that fall within his constitutional powers as president, almost that it will be impossible to proceed with the criminal trial before the US presidential elections scheduled for next November 5. .
