Service workers in Moscow must be vaccinated against Covid-19, says mayor

The Russian capital, Moscow, must carry out mandatory vaccination of city residents working in the service sector against Covid-19, the city mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Wednesday, warning that the increase in the number of infections is dramatic.

The requirement will apply to many sectors of the economy. As the authorities explain, these are employees of trade and catering companies, as well as employees of financial institutions and postal customer departments, as well as residents who work in beauty salons, sports centers, swimming pools.

The requirement will also cover transport, education, health and social services, culture, leisure and other areas.

“We just have to do everything we can to carry out mass vaccinations in the shortest possible time and to stop this terrible disease, to stop the deaths of thousands of people,” the mayor explained in a blog post.

The incidence of Covid-19 in Moscow has continued to rise in recent weeks, with a similar trend in many parts of Russia.

Russia has the sixth highest number of infections in the world, but President Vladimir Putin has so far said Russia the pandemic is coping better than most other countries.

Authorities are struggling to persuade the population to be vaccinated, although a mass vaccination campaign was launched in December.
