Servant system reading in Salzburg – Samerberger Nachrichten

Next Thursday, October 17th, a reading on the subject of servants on farms with a look at the past will take place in the House of Folk Cultures in Salzburg (Zuguallistraße 10, 5020 Salzburg). Starts at 4 p.m.

Until about 80 years ago, it was common in rural areas for young people to work on farms for little pocket money or just for room and board. The authors Franz Innerhofer and Georg Eberl impressively processed this hard work, which was often associated with great privation, in their novels. They provide an intensive insight into life at that time, characterized by poverty and social exclusion. Both literary and scientific perspectives on this topic will be presented as part of a reading and dialogue. The historical and social aspects of servanthood on farms are examined in order to enable a deeper understanding of this often forgotten reality of life.

  • Dr. Silvia Bengesser-Scharinger (Salzburg Literature Archive) is dedicated to the work of Georg Eberl.
  • Mag.ª Monika Brunner-Gaurek (Land of Salzburg) sheds light on the historical and social aspects of the servant system on farms.
  • Charly Rabansertheater maker and author, reads from Franz Innerhofer’s novel “Beautiful days”.
  • Moderation: Mag. Florian Gantnerartistic director of “Literature Finds Land”.
  • Musical accompaniment: Anita Költringer (zither).
