Police received a report of the accident between Gjøvik and Mjøsbrua shortly after 09:00 today.
A car and a truck had collided in Zone 80.
– This is a very serious incident, Internal Police Operations Director Frode Øvreås told NRK.
Now the police confirm that the driver of the car died in the accident. The person died instantly.
The next of kin have been notified.
There were no more people involved in the accident than the two drivers. The truck driver must be physically unharmed.
Cause unknown
The accident occurred on National Highway 4 between Gjøvik and Mjøsbrua, about four kilometers north of Gjøvik city centre.
The sequence of events is currently unknown. The car and truck went off in separate directions, but police still don’t know what caused the collision.
The forensic technicians of the scientific police are now on their way to the scene of the accident.
Operations director Frode Øvreås says he has received no reports today of particularly difficult driving conditions on the section in question.
Chaos on the ring road
National Highway 4 was closed at the crash site for many hours. There was a detour sign on County Road 2410 for passenger cars, but there was regular chaos after that.
The very slippery roads caused many cars to skid or jam, and for a long time neither forward nor reverse was possible.
Trams also struggled to get there due to the accident on the National Highway.
Updated
Shortly after two-thirty this afternoon, Highway 4 was reopened to traffic.
