Serious corona situation: country prefers MV summit | NDR.de – news

Status: 04/14/2021 2:52 p.m.

The state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has waited a long time and looked at the federal government – now it is pushing the pace: Because the corona situation is worsening across the country, the MV summit is to discuss tougher measures from Thursday.

by Stefan Ludmann, NDR 1 Radio MV

Events rolled over on Wednesday morning and it became hectic in political Schwerin. The reason: the increasing number of corona infections and concerns about the situation in the intensive care units. The MV summit, which was actually only supposed to present new measures in the fight against pandemics on Saturday, will then be brought forward to Thursday (April 15). The state government and the leaders of the parliamentary groups hastily agreed on this in the morning. The warning calls that demand quick action have recently become louder and louder.

Badenschier: Federal and state strategy failed

They also came from Rico Badenschier (SPD), the mayor of Schwerin. The 42-year-old is a physician by nature. He described the situation in the hospitals as worrying. Last Friday, only one free intensive care bed was reported for the Helios Clinic in Schwerin. Badenschier has ordered a curfew between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. for his state capital from today (April 14).

The seven-day incidence in Schwerin has risen to over 150. The openings of the past few weeks would take revenge, said Badenschier, almost resigned. The prospect is rather bleak, the summer holidays must now be saved – they will begin in a good two months. The mayor drew this conclusion: “The federal and state strategy to combat the corona pandemic of the last six to eight weeks must be viewed as a failure.”

Left: Badenschier hinders his own decisions

His general accounting did not go down well in national politics. Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) did not want to comment on the statements of her party friend. But left faction leader Simone Oldenburg did that: “Badenschier not only stabbed his own prime minister in the back, but also his own decisions.” Oldenburg pointed out that Badenschier had always sat at the MV summit and supported the Corona resolutions there.

“A camel that trots endlessly through the desert”

Badenschier receives support from another local politician: Stefan Sternberg (SPD), district administrator in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, said that despite all efforts, the pandemic fight was not progressing properly. “The incidence numbers are skyrocketing. We are not achieving what we want to achieve: low incidence numbers and then reopening.” The local politician compared the situation to a camel trotting endlessly through the desert. It is always said that behind the next dune there is a wonderful oasis with lush green grass and fresh water. “And we always see the sheer disappointment when we come over the dune: Unfortunately, again only desert and drought.”

There is no longer any talk of opening up tourism

That has to change, and that is why Sternberg advocates sharper cuts that will bring about a real turnaround. The MV summit will then start thinking about what they look like from Thursday. On Tuesday, Schwesig refused to bring the summit forward for scheduling reasons and instead asked the federal government to quickly submit the Infection Protection Act. Before Easter, she had even considered opening holiday apartments and holiday homes – despite her criticism of vacation trips to Mallorca. Today – less than 14 days later – said SPD parliamentary group leader Thomas Krüger: “The situation is serious in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The numbers are increasing. We will have to advise what measures we must take to bring the incidences back under. “

Instead of loosening, a tightened lockdown

Krüger did not want to say anything about the measures. Health Minister Harry Glawe (CDU) said: “We need free intensive care beds and the prognoses are not so good.” A functioning health system is important, and all measures must be geared towards this. It is also clear that the easing demanded by the economy will probably not happen anytime soon. For this, the Dehoga and the tourism industry demonstrated again in front of the state parliament on Wednesday morning. Instead of openings, there is the extended lockdown and it will probably be tightened again. One thing is already certain: Due to the high incidence, many daycare centers and schools in the country will be closed from next Monday.
