Serious Accident on Nieuwe Koolweg near Zierikzee: Five Trapped

ZIERIKZEE – A serious accident occurred on the Nieuwe Koolweg (N59) near Zierikzee on Thursday morning, trapping a total of five people. The emergency services are on site.

The accident happened around 7.25 am between Gasthuisdreef and Klerksweg. According to the Zeeland Safety Region (VRZ), a collision occurred between several vehicles at the scene. Several people were unable to get out of their cars independently. “Four cars were involved in the accident. Two vehicles were trapped. One person was freed from one (a van), and four people from the other car (a passenger car),” the VRZ said.

At least six ambulance teams and two trauma helicopters have been deployed. The first trauma helicopter, the one from Rotterdam, arrived on site around 7:50 am. The trauma team from Nijmegen arrived about 25 minutes later. The fire brigade has labeled the incident as ‘major emergency response’. The fire brigade deployed three fire engines and an emergency vehicle.

The road will remain closed for the time being for police investigation and clean-up work. The accident causes significant traffic disruption. According to Rijkswaterstaat, there was already a traffic jam of about three kilometers from the direction of Serooskerke (SD) around 7:50 am. Diversions have been set up via routes U15 and U16. There are no details yet about the cause of the accident.
