Jonas Vingegaard is the most serious: immobilized and taken away in an ambulance, Evenepoel has a broken collarbone, the Slovenian’s condition is unclear
A terrible accident about 30 kilometers from the end of the fourth stage of the Tour of the Basque Country, a race in which some of the best riders in the world take part. In a wide right bend, apparently easy but very fast, some athletes at the head of the group slipped outside the road where – unfortunately – there were large boulders completely unprotected. The most probable hypothesis at the moment seems to be a tire explosion.
On the ground, motionless, Jonas Vingegaard, the Danish phenomenon who won the last two Tours de France, remained first. It took 20 minutes to stabilize the Visma rider, then Jonas was transferred on a stretcher and into an ambulance with an oxygen mask. At the beginning, the conditions of a rider from UAE Emirates, later identified as the Australian Jay Vine who regained consciousness in the ambulance, and another from Totale Energies seemed serious.
Former world champion Remco Evenepoel is standing, but probably with a fractured collarbone, while race leader and winner of the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta Primoz Roglic is standing but out of the race, and was able to leave the race with the team’s flagship. Bora. The race was suspended, three athletes in more serious conditions remained in the ambulances for another twenty minutes waiting to be stabilized. Then the jury, with a totally questionable decision, decided to let the race restart but only for the fugitives.
