Robert Lewandowski’s hunt for Gerd Müller’s age-old record electrifies the Bundesliga. Only one hit is missing for the Pole, around the 40-goal mark Bombers from the 1971/72 season to crack. In an interview with the FCB club magazine “51”, Bayern legends explain what makes Lewandowski so special – and why he can make history this season. In the first part, Mario Gómez has his say. The attacker wore the jersey of the German record champions from 2009 to 2013, with which he won the triple in 2013, among other things. In total, Gómez scored 170 goals in 328 Bundesliga games.
Part 1: Mario Gómez on Robert Lewandowski

Mario Gómez’s most successful Bundesliga season after goals was 2011/12, when he scored 28 times for Bayern.
“We strikers just want to shoot on goal. That’s just how we were born. For us, there is no better feeling than scoring a goal on the pitch. I had this feeling when I was a little kid with bolts, later in training and in games. And I believe in Lewy it is similar. He’s a thoroughbred striker. When I happened to meet him recently, I said to him: ‘You’re one of those exceptional players who you get the feeling that they’re not getting old, just getting better and better. Like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimović. ‘”
Admiration for Lewandowski’s versatility
“I trust him that he will continue to play at this level for another four or five years. That wasn’t the case for me when I was in my mid-30s. I was a striker who lived from the dynamism, from the first few meters, from the strength. Lewy Is quite different. He has everything in his repertoire that one can have. He’s not just the sprinter, he’s the most complete striker in the world. It’s also amazing how easy he makes scoring goals look. I was with Bayern myself for four years and I know how difficult it really is. “

“The fact that he scratches Gerd Müller’s record in a season without preparation and with extreme stress is surreal. It shows that he is an absolute professional with an incredible feeling for his body. I expected that the 40-goal mark would fall at some point. Bayern have dominated the Bundesliga for years, similar to Barcelona and Real Madrid in Spain – and Messi scored 50 goals there in one season, Ronaldo 48. I wish Lewy many more goals. Because nothing can replace this feeling. “
