EBENSE. In the autumn, the Ebensee Museum of Contemporary History will devote a four-part lecture series to the theme “Sport and propaganda”.
At the beginning of the cycle of conferences, the sports historian Univ. Prof. Dr. Rudolf Müllner (University of Vienna) on “Functionalization and political significance of sport and physical culture”. The relationship between sport and politics is often paraphrased with two extreme positions. One idealizes sport as a politically free zone, the other emphasizes the political dimension (eg 1936 Olympic Games) of sport. However, the fact that the interactions between the social fields of sport and politics are more complex must be shown in this lesson using historical and current examples. It goes beyond the area of sport in the strict sense and also addresses the political significance of modern physical self-optimization practices.
