“Something has to happen now”: After a series of accidents involving sports cars, Gabriela Suter submits a proposal in Bern
Time and again, young drivers rent powerful sports cars and get into accidents with them. Or they fall into the law enforcement radar traps at excessive speed. Now sports cars are once again being targeted by Aargau politics.
The Tele M1 “Current” article on the topic.
Just last Saturday there was an accident on the A1 near Lenzburg in which a 20-year-old wrecked a rented Mc Laren sports car. According to the police, the vehicle had 570 horsepower.
This incident is one of many in the canton of Aargau. Young drivers often have accidents in sports cars because they are traveling too fast and lose control of the vehicle.
Aargau National Councilor Gabriela Suter now wants to put a stop to this trend. She plans to submit a motion on the topic in Bern. She explained to the regional broadcaster Tele M1: “These cars handle differently than normal ones. That’s why I suggest that you have to take an additional driving test.” Specifically, these are a few more lessons in which young drivers learn how to properly get such cars under control.
A year and a half ago, Suter tried to introduce a horsepower limit for new drivers. However, her demand failed in the National Council. But because the accidents involving young drivers and over-engineered cars continue, the SP politician is trying again. Suter: “Something has to happen now. The police and driving instructors as well as people from the public, from whom I keep receiving letters, also think so.”
Sports car rental companies open to stricter laws
In Holziken, too, the police had to deal with a young speeder on Monday morning. There, the officers pulled a 30-year-old Porsche driver out of traffic who was traveling at 196 km/h outside of town. His vehicle was also extremely powerful with 600 hp. According to Bernhard Graser, media spokesman for the Aargau cantonal police, the phenomenon has been known for some time and is therefore being monitored more closely.
Meanwhile, even landlords of such sports cars, like Philipp Hafner from Dietikon, are not averse to stricter legislation. “We were all young once,” he explains to Tele M1. “But if 18 to 20-year-olds are already driving cars with over 500 horsepower, that is gross negligence.” After all, you can’t really drive a car at this age.
