Serie B, Sassuolo humiliates Sampdoria and regains the top spot

Sassuolo humiliates Sampdoria (5-1) and remains alone at the top of the table, leaving Pisa at -3. Spezia also keeps pace with the top two and remains -1 from zone A thanks to a clear 5-0 at the expense of Cittadella. Sunday’s feat was achieved by Reggiana who surprised Cremonese at Zini (0-2), thus moving into fourth place by Bari. Finally, Catanzaro came from behind to overcome Brescia (2-1), also overtaking them in the playoff race.

SASSUOLO-SAMPDORIA 5-1
Sassuolo is increasingly a perfect machine: they also score 5 goals against Sampdoria, contested by their fans who arrived in Reggio, and win their fifth victory in a row (eighth in the last 9). The match breaks the deadlock in the 25th minute: Laurienté bursts into the near post following Pieragnolo’s cross and scores. In the 45th minute Berardi’s corner, Thorstvedt’s shot and from two steps Odenthal escaped and Ferrari doubled the score. In the second half in the 64th minute Thorstvedt with the sole for Berardi: triggered by Pierini who shoots centrally and Vismara lets the ball slip under his legs. Shortly after Toljan’s cross, Yepes returns badly and Berardi makes poker with a first left foot. Samp pulls back thanks to Coda’s penalty (knocked down by Odenthal), but in the 90th minute Doig shoots with his left foot, Vismara saves but Berardi scores a double in the tap-in.

SPEZIA-CITTADELLA 5-0
Spezia plays poker at the Cittadella and remains -1 behind Pisa, second. Already in the first part of the match the Ligurians were in command, coming close to scoring on a couple of occasions. The guests did not sit idly by and countered with shots from Pandolfi and Magrassi which challenged Gori. The match broke the deadlock in the 34th minute with a corner action: Reca hit the crossbar, and Pio Esposito scored the rebound into the net for his eighth goal of the season. From then on it’s a monologue from the whites who score the second goal with a mess by the Cittadella defense: on Salvatore Esposito’s free kick, there are three deflections, first Negro, then Trochin and finally it’s Kastrati, after the post, to deflect the ball into his own goal. The trio of the first half was completed by Salvatore Esposito’s penalty, awarded due to a foul by Negro on Candelari. The fourth goal came at the start of the second half, with a free kick from the edge of the box by Salvatore Esposito, deflected into his own goal by Piccinini. But it’s not over, the fifth goal also arrives from a corner action: Wisniewski scored it with a header.

CATANZARO-BRESCIA 2-1
Catanzaro prevails over Brescia in full recovery. First emotion after 5′: on the development of a corner the ball goes to Compagnon who, alone in the middle of the area, finds Lezzerini’s deflection onto the crossbar. Later there were also opportunities for the swallows with two headers from Borrelli which missed the target. The starter of the goal, which always comes with a header by Bjarnason who scores a cross from the right by Galazzi. Catanzaro is unable to react and Brescia closes all the gaps well without disdaining offensive gusts. The equalizer comes almost by chance with Biasci who, thanks to Lezzerini’s uncertainty, scores at the far post from D’Alessandro’s cross. In the first quarter of an hour of the second half two shots each, without luck, by Galazzi and Biasci. After the substitution waltz, the hosts showed that they believed in it more and came close to hitting the target with Compagnon: the same winger found the net 3′ from the end, but after a long check the goal was disallowed for offside. Very long recovery and in the 98th minute Bonini scores the winning goal who – after the last chance wasted by Galazzi – writes the sweet ending for the Calabrians who interrupt the streak of 5 draws in a row.

CREMONESE-REGGIANA 0-2
Cremonese flies away but struggles a lot at home. At the Zini the winning streak stops in front of Reggiana who exploits all the indecisions of the grey-red defense with Vergara and Vido in the opening and closing of the match. Reggiana soon takes the lead: Ravanelli returns the ball against an opponent, Portanova penetrates the area and passes behind where Vergara finds the right opening and scores. Cremonese responds with a shot from Bonazzoli who shortly after leaves the field due to injury. Moment of confusion for Cremonese who risks: Portanova scores but is offside when he receives the ball from Sampirisi. At 43′ launch for Portanova, Ravanelli misses the mark but the attacker alone in front of Fulignati with a touch below sends it incredibly to the back. Cremonese shakes off in the second half with Zanimacchia and Vazquez, then in the 55th minute Portanova comes into contact with Zanimacchia in the area. Scatena awards the penalty which he then takes away after checking the VAR. Cremonese keeps the ball but does little and doesn’t overcome their defensive amnesia: in the 90th minute a long ball for Girma who clears Vido with his heel with a precise shot to close the score.
