Follow all live updates as the Serie A betting scandal continues to expand and evolve following yesterday’s revelations.
Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli yesterday admitted betting on an illegal platform to investigators and voluntarily handed over his mobile phone to the police, increasing the scale of the scandal. The 22-year-old is said to be more than a million euros in debt due to his serious gambling addiction.
Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo were both questioned by police at Italy’s Coverciano training camp last night over their alleged involvement. Both subsequently withdrew from the team, forcing Luciano Spalletti to bring in Samuele Ricci and Stephan El Shaarawy to replace them.
La Repubblica reported today that at least 10 other Serie A players – including one from Juventus – are believed to be involved in the scandal, which could result in a ban of up to three years. The suspension can be reduced if those involved cooperate.
