The hypercar SSC Tuatara set a world speed record among production cars on October 10. Experienced pilot Oliver Webb was able to accelerate the car to 532 km / h. However, the record will indicate the average speed – 508.73 km / h.
The record was set on the 11-kilometer straight section of State Route 160 in Nevada. It looked like this:
–
At the same time, according to Webb, the car could go faster:
When I got close to 331 mph (about 533 km / h), the Tuatara had hit almost 20 mph (somewhere around 31 km / h) in the previous five seconds. He was still going well. The car is not yet exhausted. The side wind prevented us from understanding the limits of the car’s capabilities.

To achieve the record “fastest production car”, several conditions had to be met:
- The car must be identical to the serial sample that the buyer can purchase;
- You need to follow the same route in both directions. Both indicators are combined and an average speed is chosen between them in order to avoid the influence of wind and road inclination on the final speed indicator. So, Webb was able to accelerate the SSC Tuatara first to 301.07 mph (484.53 km / h), and on the way back – 331.15 mph (532.93 km / h). The record contains the average speed: 508.73 km / h;
- Speed must be monitored using certified equipment and in the presence of two world record holders;
- Tires and fuel should be on a daily basis.
Along the way, in addition to the main record, three more were broken:
- “Fastest Mile Off the Run on a Public Road” – 313.12 mph (503.92 km / h);
- Fastest Off-Road Kilometer on a Public Road – 321.35 mph (517.16 km / h);
- “Fastest speed on a public road” – 331.15 mph (532.93 km / h).
Of course, it is rather difficult to call the Tuatara a serial car: is it possible to consider such a car, the circulation of which does not exceed hundreds of pieces?
The SSC Tuatara is one of the few cars that claims two capacities according to the passport: 1369 horsepower for regular gasoline and 1774 hp. from. on a mixture of E85 (85% ethanol and 15% gasoline). These are the figures for the 5.9-liter V8, which received two turbochargers and an injection system with two injectors per cylinder. This engine is assisted by the CIMA seven-speed “robot”.
The previous record was set in 2017 with the Koenigsegg Agera RS. Then the car managed to develop an average speed of 447 km / h:
–
Faster than the Koenigsegg was the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, piloted by racer Andy Wallace. In September 2019, he was able to accelerate the hypercar to 490 km / h. However, it was not a production car, but Bugatti never shared the changelog.
