Serhou Guirassy: The Super Goalscorer Leading VfB Stuttgart to the Top of the Bundesliga

Serhou Guirassy again and again: The super goalscorer has shot VfB Stuttgart to the top of the Bundesliga with a record. In the 3-1 win against VfL Wolfsburg, the 27-year-old scored all three of the hosts’ goals and set a league record with 13 goals after seven matchdays. After falling behind through Yannick Gerhardt (34th), the Swabians showed their morale, it was already their sixth win of the season.

Guirassy was hardly visible for long stretches before he single-handedly decided the game with a hat trick within 15 minutes (67′, penalty/78’/82′). Wolfsburg’s seven-time goalscorer Jonas Wind, however, was completely unregistered.

At least overnight, VfB, who have not yet lost a home game under coach Sebastian Hoeneß, can call themselves leaders. Wolfsburg is lurking behind the top places with twelve points.

“They all have to stop”

Guirassy could have given VfB the lead early on. He shot the ball over the line, but was offside when he finished. “Guirassy has done very well so far. But his goals were only possible because he was well worked on. We have to stop them all,” VfL coach Niko Kovac warned his players in advance.

But there was also danger from Chris Führich, who was called up to the German national team for the first time. The winger started the game with a lot of momentum and repeatedly gave his opponents headaches. However, a shot from him towards the VfL goal was blocked.

On the other side, there was hardly any sign of the Danish attacker Wind. In the first half hour he only had the ball twice. Since the 24-year-old was removed from the VfB backline, someone else had to take over the job of scoring goals. Gerhardt benefited from a failed block by Waldemar Anton, which fell at his feet. The inside post also played a role.

After the break, VfB dared more. However, Guirassy failed to get past Casteels after a pass (54′). The more offensive style of play opened up space for Wolfsburg. When he reunited with his former club, Tiago Tomás lost out to Alexander Nübel between the posts.

Hoeneß now also reacted in terms of personnel, bringing in two players, Silas Katompa Mvumpa and Deniz Undav, who were supposed to liven up the offensive game. And it became more turbulent. Guirassy was brought down by Cédric Zesiger and after the video referee intervened, referee Daniel Siebert awarded a penalty. Guirassy stepped up and converted.

What followed in the quarter hour after that was a demonstration of his skills. The numbers also prove this: not even Gerd Müller and Robert Lewandowski had managed 13 goals after seven match days in Bundesliga history. He was greeted with an ovation by the audience when he was substituted in stoppage time, when the game had already been decided.
