BANGKAPOS.COM – Sergio Ramos has reportedly turned down the chance to move to Manchester United this summer in favor of returning to boyhood club Sevilla on a free transfer.
The 37-year-old left Paris Saint-Germain when his contract expired at the end of June, and he was heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia earlier this summer.
There is also believed to be interest from MLS, but Ramos has already completed his return to Sevilla, 18 years after leaving Estadio Ramon for Real Madrid.
According to The Sun, following Raphael Varane’s injury, Man United approached the experienced centre-back, offering him a one-year contract worth £73,000 a week.
However, the report claims the former Spain international immediately rejected the offer, as he is only interested in returning to Sevilla.
Ramos shed tears when discussing his return to Estadio Ramon and admitted he regretted leaving the club and celebrating in front of the Sevilla crowd in 2018 when he scored against them.
“Today is a very special day. I’m finally back home, I can’t wait to feel the Sevilla uniform again and wear this badge,” he told Sevilla TV.
“Eighteen years have passed since I left, I think I made a mistake and I want to take this opportunity to apologize and apologize to any Seville player who was offended by the things and attitude I was able to do at that time. We are all in the same boat, we all come from the same family and we have too many people on the outside to fight with each other.
“Talking about my grandfather makes me emotional. The image I left is terrible, he left here crying. In the end we were born Sevilla fans.
“The last memory of my grandpa was really bad, leaving this place (of Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan) and seeing how people whistled for his grandson.
“Of course when I made my decision I took it into account. We didn’t deserve it. Both as a family, and as a fan, I think it cost and punished all of us. When moments like this come, you receive a lot of offers.
“I don’t like to talk. But we have a chance to continue in Paris. Away from my home, from Seville and Madrid. We reflect and see how the years go by, and opportunities go by.”
Man United re-signed Jonny Evans on a free transfer on September 1, and the Northern Ireland international completed Sunday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal at the heart of defense alongside Harry Maguire.
Varane’s injury meant Victor Lindelof started alongside Lisandro Martinez, but both centre-backs were substituted in the second half of the game at the Emirates Stadium.
Lindelof and Martinez are both expected to be available for Man United’s next Premier League match against Brighton & Hove Albion on September 16, which will likely see Maguire and Evans return to the bench at Old Trafford.
