Perez struggled to match teammate and pole sitter Max Verstappen’s times at the Yas Marina circuit, but was able to set a time good enough for fifth place in the final Q3 run. Ta.

With his best lap invalidated, Perez, who had complained of “terrible drivability,” was limited to ninth on the grid in qualifying.

“Yeah, it wasn’t ideal. It was really tricky. It hurt to have that lap time removed,” said a disappointed Perez.

“Q3 wasn’t clean. I lost a few tenths due to a mistake in Turn 6, but other than that I was at least starting fifth. But with the laps deleted, things are a little tougher. ”

Perez called on F1 stewards to find a better solution to track limits, claiming the lap deletion would cause “confusion”.

Article 33.3 of F1’s Sporting Regulations simply states that drivers must make ‘all reasonable efforts’ to use the track at all times. “For the avoidance of doubt, white lines defining track edges are considered to be part of the track, but curbs are not.”

“Yes, it’s always frustrating, especially when it’s a close game, but I have no choice but to rely on the stewards,” said Perez, who was unconvinced when he first heard about his violation.

Perez finished Saturday’s run 0.726s behind Verstappen, largely due to Verstappen switching to soft tires for his first run in Q3.
