Sergio K. was sentenced in the first instance to 30 years in prison for involvement in the liquidation of Sven Prins. The victim was shot dead in Brunssum in September 2015 during a chase with several salvos from an automatic firearm. The man who was in the car with Prince barely managed to escape. In 2016, after an undercover operation by a secret agent, three suspects were arrested: Jurandy T., Xionel B. and Sergio K.

The latter can freely await the appeal decision, which is scheduled for November 11, the court ruled on Monday. That is remarkable, because in September he heard demands against him for another thirty years in prison, equivalent to the prison sentence imposed on him by the court. However, Sergio K. has always maintained that he was not present at the liquidation.

The case took a surprising turn last month when Sergio K.’s mother-in-law called out Hassan K.’s last name during a pause from the audience. According to her, he would have been involved in the liquidation of Sven Prins and therefore not Sergio K. An investigation by the judiciary then led to the Belgian Hassan K. It is being examined whether he was involved in the fatal shooting in 2015. The Public Prosecution Service and the defense filed a request to hear him on Monday. The court is still considering that request. In the meantime, Sergio K. may await the developments in freedom. “Perhaps a lighter sentence will be imposed than the time that K. has been in custody”, the court explained. K. has been incarcerated for six years now.
