Sergi Darder reignites the issue of mental health in football
Sergi Darder once again spoke shamelessly about mental health. The midfielder, who moved to Mallorca this season, after witnessing Espanyol’s second relegation in three years, told the program ‘El Tercer Tiempo’, on Movistar Plus+, about what he went through.
“I don’t have to hide, in the year of Espanyol’s first relegation [em 2019/20] I was very bad. It’s difficult to talk about ‘depression’, because they are ‘big’ words, but I was really bad. I locked myself in my room all day, I didn’t want to see my wife or my children. I didn’t want to see anyone”, explained the player.
“Those were complicated moments, when I gave everything. I was a very bad player in that sense because I wasn’t capable of being myself, nor of being at 50 percent. At that time my head wasn’t performing and my legs were much less so. a bad season in individual and collective terms that, fortunately, with the help of psychologists, I managed to overcome and now I can really enjoy football”, added the player, born in the Balearic Islands, who left home at the age of 13.
