Sergey Stanishev’s Views on Bulgaria’s Entry into Schengen and Domestic Politics

You can’t keep refugees where they don’t want to live. These concerns are overblown. It is important to enter Schengen to be in the core of Europe, but it is also important economically. Bulgaria and Romania have fulfilled their conditions, we should not be discriminated against. To enter by air and water is an insufficient result for me. It is unacceptable that there is no date for the land entry. This was stated by former Prime Minister and current MEP Sergey Stanishev in “The Day Begins with Georgi Lyubenov” on BNT.

He added that he has no doubts about the US support for Bulgaria to enter Schengen.

Regarding domestic policy, Sergey Stanishev stated that the main problem for our country in political terms is the lack of long-term goals.

“Everything is day by day. Let’s fix things – from the budget, through laws and constitutional changes and everything without thinking about what this will lead to in 10 years. Politics without a cause will always be piecemeal. It is important to define precise goals. That’s why there is a deficit. The assembly motivates its existence with external factors. Unfortunately, the opposition is more focused on the past. There is more talk about the nostalgic. The important thing is to talk about the future,” he added.

According to Stanishev, the big mistake of the non-coalition is that they mislead the people.

“There should be integrity. It should have been said – you, the Bulgarians, voted and a government should be formed. That’s why we are forming a coalition and there should be clear rules. At the time, the triple coalition was criticized a lot, but it had clear rules. And now there are many agreements behind the scenes”, the former prime minister was categorical.

He believes that politicians owe it to the people to explain what is happening, what can happen and how Bulgaria can find its place in this changing world.

“We are tired of the transition because it was promised as something short and nice,” said Sergey Stanishev.

He was adamant that democracy must be defended.

“Democracy must be defended because it is very fragile. But this does not happen with self-serving confrontation. I see that this is the way of speaking that dominates the political. We must at least in some spheres seek a national consensus and regardless of who is on power, not with every government to start from zero and get to zero, but still have consistency,” explained the former prime minister.

He also commented on the upcoming elections for the European Parliament, as according to him there will be socialists at the European level.

“These elections are underestimated in our country. The decisions that affect Bulgaria are made there. There must be competent people who know how things happen in the EU. The attitude towards the delegation of socialists is not very positive. It hurts me that the BSP fails to generates energies around itself,” added Sergey Stanishev.

According to him: “Bulgaria’s huge problem is not only that we export labor force and we all know it, but that we also export unborn children, because Bulgarians working abroad give birth to their children, stay there and very few return.”
