The penguins started their ice training this summer much earlier than in previous years. Because ice is only available in Krefeld on August 1st, those responsible in Wesel rented the smooth parquet. Since last Wednesday, the selection of coach Clark Donatelli has been practicing daily in the ice rink there. It is an additional effort for everyone involved. The players need around 45 minutes for the 40 km journey. Because the hall and the cabins are also used by other teams, each player has to move his extensive equipment into his car.

Kit manager Christian Menningen, who is in his 17th season, takes care of the additional materials. As a link between him and the new team manager Philipp Hoth, Andre Saveljev will act as equipment manager in the coming season. He is the father of managing director and sports director Sergey Saveljev. The 25 year old has taken on a third job with the penguins. He trains the goalkeepers and replaces Igor Gross, who in future will act as a link between the penguins and KEV 81 and take care of the young goalkeepers.

U20 national goalkeeper Nikita Quapp, who is currently attending a course for the national team in Füssen, had reason to be happy late on Saturday evening. He was drafted by the NHL club Carolina Hurricans in the sixth round at position 187. His two goalkeeping colleagues Sergei Belov and Oleg Shilin were absent from ice training on Sunday because they had been vaccinated the day before.

Although no goalkeepers were available, three other players besides Quapp are attending the U20 national team’s course and four contingent players have not yet arrived in Krefeld, Saveljev did not let himself go on the ice to support the coaching team. “Good communication is important to me. I’m so close to the players and I can help translate if I have language problems, ”said Saveljev after training, during which twelve players played on the well-prepared ice surface.

It was noticeable during this training session that mainly assistant coach Igor Zakharkin gave the speeches to the team. Boris Blank or Saveljev then translated from Russian into German or English. Donatelli held back a little. After training, however, the 53-year-old American was looking forward to his new team and the season in the DEL with the penguins. “We will train a lot with the boys and improve their skills further,” said he. “Of course there is still a lot of work ahead of us. Some import players are still missing. Overall, however, we have a better team than last season and we should certainly be able to reach the play-offs. “

Defender Domenik Tiffels, who has switched to Pinguien from Cologne, is full of praise for the early start to ice training: “It’s great that we’re already on the ice and that a large part of the team is already there. So the trainers can already work in a targeted manner. On paper we have a strong team with good contingent players. The play-offs are definitely the goal. “

During one of the top transfers of the penguins this summer, the 190 centimeter long Swede Alexander Bergström, the good target guidance and the skating qualities were immediately apparent. The 35-year-old, who has a lot of international experience, said: “I heard from some compatriots that there is a new owner in Krefeld and they have taken great care of me. The organization is good here and everything is very professional. Which role I should play in the team remains to be seen. “
