The editor of the Russian Novaya Gazeta, Sergej Sokolov, is accused of having “discredited the Russian forces”.

According to Novaja Gazeta, it should be about a specific news article, but which one is not known.
Should Sokolov be found guilty, he could be fined up to 50,000 roubles, which corresponds to around NOK 5,800, according to the newspaper.
Novaya Gazeta is published abroad after it was closed in Russia. Sokolov was one of the employees who remained in Moscow when large parts of the staff moved to Latvia.

Sokolov took over the helm of Russia’s Novaya Gazeta in September 2023, after Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov trakk seg da han was labeled a foreign agent by Russian authorities.
The label is applied to actors who are accused of accepting foreign support and exercising unacceptable political activity.
Meduza writes that Sokolov was arrested in Moscow on Thursday.
Muratov received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021. In recent years, the Russian authorities have classified a large number of journalists, human rights activists and oppositionists as foreign agents.
