Sergej Sokolov Arrested for Discrediting Russian Forces: Latest News 2022

The editor of the Russian Novaya Gazeta, Sergej Sokolov, is accused of having “discredited the Russian forces”.

According to Novaja Gazeta, it should be about a specific news article, but which one is not known.

Should Sokolov be found guilty, he could be fined up to 50,000 roubles, which corresponds to around NOK 5,800, according to the newspaper.

Novaya Gazeta is published abroad after it was closed in Russia. Sokolov was one of the employees who remained in Moscow when large parts of the staff moved to Latvia.

Sokolov took over the helm of Russia’s Novaya Gazeta in September 2023, after Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov trakk seg da han was labeled a foreign agent by Russian authorities.

Meduza writes that Sokolov was arrested in Moscow on Thursday.
