The Preventive Medicine service of the health area of Vigo participates in an international clinical study for the development of a new vaccine against Covid19. Six Spanish hospitals from four autonomous communities (Galicia, Valencia, Catalonia and Madrid) participate in this multicenter study, which is already in the preliminary phase of its commercialization, Phase III. In addition to the Vigo complex, the Galician community is also represented by the Santiago Hospital Complex.
As explained by the head of the Preventive Medicine service, Victor del Campo, “The objective of this research is to develop a different vaccine to those currently on the market; with an adjuvant product that improves the immune response and that, ultimately, attributes a higher level of protection and a longer duration of protection time ”.
Advantages of the new vaccine
One of the main novelties of this new vaccine is that it is made against viruses other than the “original Wuhan”; that is, it is expected to attribute greater efficacy and coverage to the new variants and current mutations of the original virus.
Another advantage is that it does not need freezing and can be stored in refrigerators, a fact that will facilitate the logistics of its distribution and, “above all, it represents a contribution of great importance for low-income countries, since it must be remembered that on the African continent, for example, only 10% of the population she is vaccinated, and with a single dose ”, explains his doctor Campo.
One hundred volunteers
The Chuvi Preventive Medicine service will contribute 100 volunteers from the Vigo health area to this study. Therefore, a call is made to the public to participate and test the viability of the serum. The only condition is that they are over 18 years of age and that they have inoculated the entire regimen (the two doses of any of the vaccines).
“We encourage people to participate in this project, in which all the security conditions required by law are guaranteed.. Without a doubt, collaborating with research and scientific and medical advances is, in addition to personal benefit, an exemplary act of maximum solidarity, commitment and social responsibility ”. Those interested may directly contact the Preventive Medicine service of the Álvaro Cunqueiro Hospital.
