Seremi de Salud reports a new case of a bat with rabies in Rancagua – 2024-03-06 21:01:02

The Seremi de Salud of the Region reported a new case of bat detected with rabies in the month of March, which adds up to 4 so far this year in the region. The new case was detected in Rancagua.

For this reason, the Zoonoses Unit and sector offices carried out vaccination of dogs and cats found within 200 meters of the place where the bat was identified.

The immunizations were carried out in Rancagua in conjunction with health education on the subject. It is important to remember that it is the obligation of dog and cat owners to keep the Rabies vaccine up to date.

In this regard, Rodrigo Proharam, Seremi de Salud (S) of the O’Higgins Region pointed out that “we have found a new bat with rabies, in this case in the commune of Rancagua, the situation was certified by the Institute of Public Health ( ISP). In these cases, the Health Authority carries out perifocos, which are intentional vaccination operations to safeguard the lives of pets and avoid any type of contagion to people.”

For her part, the person in charge of the Zoonosis Unit of the Seremi de Salud O’Higgins, Dr. Fabiola Faúndez, expressed that “the call is for people to always be alert when there is a suspicious bat, this means that it is visible during the day and lethargic; People must be clear that the animal is not going to attack them, but may be mistaken for a pet. The call is to keep pets with the vaccination schedule up to date.”

Dr. Faúndez advised what to do if a bat is found in strange conditions, “the important thing is that if a person finds a bat in their home, either because the pet brought it or they found it lethargic on the ground, they should not you must make contact with him; “You have to put on thick gloves and take a box or pot and place it on the bat to enclose it and leave it in one of the Seremi de Salud offices.”

It should be noted that if someone finds a bat in atypical conditions (erratic flight or presence in daylight), with all the indicated precautions, it should be taken to the Sanitary Action office located at Bueras 555 or Mujica 169 in Rancagua or at the sector offices. of the Seremi de Salud in Pichilemu, Rengo, Santa Cruz, San Vicente and San Fernando.

Javier Medina, a resident of Rancagua and attendee of the perifoco, stressed that “it is good that this vaccination is done preventively when a bat with rabies is found. “I was worried about my pet, we have to take care of them and keep their vaccines up to date.”

Likewise, the residents of the area where the bat was found thanked Seremi de Salud for caring about their health and that of their pets.

“For us, this perifoco is very important, as it helps us take care of the health of pets and the inhabitants of the sector. It is dangerous for a bat infection to spread, so we must take care of each other. This strategy is extremely positive, we thank the Seremi de Salud for protecting our health,” concluded Sergio Herrera, a resident of Rancagua.
