Serbia’s Participation in the Crimean Platform Summit: Statement and Position on the Declaration

There was a lot of joy that Serbia for the first time took part in the Crimean Platform summit. However, as the country’s Foreign Ministry noted, Belgrade did not support the declaration of this peace initiative. It is interesting that the head of the department made a corresponding statement after a meeting with the Russian ambassador.

This year, the Crimean Platform summit was held, as in the previous two years, on August 23. It was attended by many high-ranking representatives of different countries, including Serbian Prime Minister Anna Brnabic.

At the same time, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, on August 25, on the air of the state television channel Pink TV, hastened to assure that his country had not signed a single declaration.

Serbia and the Crimean Platform

Importantly, Dacic said about “manipulations” regarding Serbia’s participation in the “Crimean Platform” after meeting with Russian Ambassador Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko. With him he discussed, among other things, the declaration recently adopted by various states in Athens.

Before the amendments by Belgrade, this document included, in particular, sanctions against the Kremlin. However, apparently to please Russia, Serbia suggested not to apply the restrictions.

Serbia has not joined either the Crimean Platform or the relevant declaration. The Prime Minister participated in the work of this body. However, we did not support it, and also did not accept the text of the “Crimean Platform” precisely because it goes beyond the limits acceptable to us,
Dacic stated.

At the same time, the Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that Serbia condemns the violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine and will continue to help it in humanitarian matters, as it has been since the very beginning of the large-scale war.

Context: more about the summit

This year, there were 67 participants at the Crimean Platform summit, as Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba informed. By the way, he was the moderator of this event. The declaration mentioned by Dacic was adopted at the first meeting in this format in 2021 by several dozen participants. It provides for the support of the territorial integrity of our state, the condemnation of Russia’s actions and the direction of diplomatic efforts in order to return the peninsula to Ukraine.
