Serbian tennis stars Novak Djokovic and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka have been crowned world champions in 2023 by the International Tennis Federation. The players were chosen due to their “outstanding performance” in the four major tournaments, as Djokovic won three of the titles, while Sabalenka achieved advanced positions, the most important of which was winning her first major title in Australia.

The International Tennis Federation said in a statement that it awarded Djokovic the men’s singles award for the eighth time, adding to the Serbian star’s unprecedented record after winning three of the four major championship titles this year.
The veteran player raised his tally of major titles to 24 titles, equaling Margaret Court’s record tally of these distinguished titles. He also won the men’s season-ending tournament title for the seventh time, which is also a record, and ended the year at the top of the international classification list for game professionals.
Sabalenka won her first major title at the Australian Open, finished second at the US Open, and reached the semi-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon.
Sabalenka lost the top spot in the international rankings to Poland’s Iga Szyantek during the final women’s tournament and expressed her happiness with her performance and results during 2023 and with being crowned world champion.
“I can’t wait to get back on the court for the new season in January,” she said in a statement from the International Tennis Federation.
Rajeev Ram and Joe Salsbury won the men’s doubles award after winning the US Open title for the third time in a row, while the women’s doubles award went to Storm Hunter and Elise Mertens after they finished second at Wimbledon.
