Serbian Minister of Economy Rade Basta called for the imposition of sanctions against Russia, from which the country had previously abstained. He wrote about this in Instagram.
“Our country is already paying a high price for not imposing sanctions on Russia, and this is becoming unbearable,” the minister said.
He stressed that, as Minister of Economy, he cannot accept “what pressure is being exerted on the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucicand we are silent.”
“That’s why I am in favor of imposing sanctions against Russia, I support President Vucic in protecting state and national interests and fully trust him. That’s why I ask the Serbian government and all ministers to make a statement on this issue,” the minister said.
As transmits BalkaninsightVučić said last week he could not “swear” that Serbia would at some point not impose sanctions on Russia over its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
- In June 2022, Vučić was outraged by the call of German Chancellor Scholz to Serbia to support sanctions against Russia and recognize Kosovo.
- In July, Vucic said that “hell awaits everyone” if the West does not accept the demands of the leader of the Russian occupiers Vladimir Putin across Ukraine.
- In November, the German government said that Serbia, traditionally maintaining close ties with Russia, must make a choice: the path to the EU or partnership with the Russian Federation.
