Incredible scenarios around Vucic have been written by the Serbian media for days. Weeks ago, Serbian Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin said a criminal group was preparing an assassination attempt on Vucic, adding that the information had come from an EU member state through Europol. The country’s prime minister, Anna Bernabic, added to the picture, saying the assassination was planned for February and the signal was received on January 14, Nova TV reported.
The motive for the planned assassination was the successful crackdown on a major drug cartel by Serbian authorities.
The criminal group aimed at assassinating the Serbian president is led by Montenegrin citizen Radoje Zvicer, one of the leaders of a clan involved in drug trafficking, as well as organizing and ordering assassinations in Serbia, Montenegro and other countries, said Vulin.
Last year, Montenegro issued an international arrest warrant for Radoje Zwitzer on suspicion that he had committed a brutal murder in an organization with two others. However, according to Serbian media, Zwitzer is in South America or Kosovo, and last week Bernabic said the main suspects in the planned attack were beyond the reach of the country’s security services.
The Serbian interior minister also said Zwitzer was not working alone on the assassination attempt, but had a “political boss” who was “part of the power structures of one of our neighboring countries” and “led people like Radoje Zwitzer for decades”. Serbian Radical leader Vojislav Seselj ordered Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic to Zwitzer.
Serbian media developed the topic and, citing their own sources, published details of the organization of the attack.
On the front page today the tabloid “Alo” writes in a headline that “Sniper waited in Bulgaria”. According to the publication, several snipers were secretly trained and sent from Slovakia to the Netherlands, Serbia and Bulgaria. The murder itself was to be carried out by a Chechen professional.
Another tabloid, Republika, reported earlier that a sniper to take Vucic’s life should have been delivered from the Czech Republic. Zwitzer organized a legal purchase of the weapon in Prague, and the dismantled sniper was to reach Bulgaria and then be imported into Serbia through the Gradina border crossing. In the “Republic” Bulgaria is also mentioned as one of the possible countries from which information came about the planned attack, along with France, Italy and Slovenia.
The plan called for the shooter to enter Serbia from Hungary and, after completing the task, to flee through Bosnia or Kosovo. According to other sources quoted by Vecernje Novosti, there were two snipers hired, one from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The attack was to take place during a public event attended by many people, such as the opening of a factory.

This is not the first time that information about a planned assassination attempt against Vucic has appeared in public. So far, however, no one has been accused or convicted of plotting to assassinate the Serbian president.
One of the emblematic cases dates back to 2016. While Vucic was Serbia’s prime minister, weapons and ammunition were found in the forest in Jaintsi, near his family home. A few days later, police in New Belgrade found a stolen Renault Megane car packed with weapons. Then-Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic commented that the weapon was “the perfect place for the attacker”. In the end, the case remains without judicial consequences.
In early 2021, information emerged about an impending assassination attempt on Vucic at the unveiling ceremony of the monument to Stefan Nemanja at the end of January. Ana Bernacic later commented that the assassination had been planned for a long time and that parallel police structures had been set up in detail.
A few days later, the public was informed of a new planned attack. Authorities say Velko Belivuk’s criminal group was preparing an attack on the president on February 5th or 6th in a roundabout truck, and the vehicle was to be equipped with an anti-tank machine gun. The criminal group was arrested on February 4, Balkan Indite writes. Seselj, meanwhile, has repeatedly warned Vucic to beware of poison.
In this context, the new announcement of a threat to the Serbian president’s life was seen by the opposition as another firework amid the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections.
Lawyer Viktor Gostiljac, quoted by Danas, said the problem was that reports of attacks on the Serbian president had become commonplace and few believed them. According to him, if the criminals who are connected with the assassination are not arrested, it is clear that everything is a “pre-election trick”.
In fact, all this should become clear only after effective actions to arrest and prosecute the suspects, says Gostilac.
Similar is the opinion of journalist Nedim Sejdinovic, who told Danas that the goal of this latest campaign to organize attacks is clear to a huge number of Serbs and is surprised that the government’s PR people have not come up with anything better before the election.
