“Serbian Government Implements New Measures in Response to School Shooting Tragedy”

The Serbian government announced a number of measures on Thursday in response to the shooting at a school in Belgrade. Eight students and a security guard were killed on Wednesday.

In a statement, the government said it would stop issuing licenses to gun owners. In addition, the Ministry of Justice is looking into whether the law can be amended in such a way that those who give children access to weapons can also be prosecuted. It is also being examined whether the age at which someone can be prosecuted criminally can be adjusted from fourteen to twelve years.

The thirteen-year-old gunman was carrying two guns when he opened fire at the school. The boy had taken it from his father, who legally owned the guns. Due to his young age, the boy cannot be prosecuted.

His father and mother have been arrested. It is not clear what exactly they are suspected of.

The shooter has been admitted to a mental institution. He would have prepared his attack for weeks, but it is still unclear why he did this.

It is the first time that Serbia has faced such a school shooting. President Aleksandar Vucic spoke of “one of the most difficult days” in the country’s recent history. Three days of national mourning apply from Friday.
