Serbia-Russia: President Vucic’s telephone conversation with Putin’s Russian counterpart for the first time in 2.5 years –

Serbian President <a href="https://www.world-today-news.com/serbia-and-kosovo-follow-trumps-diktats-on-israel-and-make-peace-in-the-economy-la-stampa/" title="Serbia and Kosovo follow Trump's 'diktats' on Israel and make peace in the economy – La Stampa”>Aleksandar Vucic had a telephone conversation today with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the first conversation between the two leaders in 2.5 years.

“I especially thanked President Putin for assuring that Russia will supply sufficient quantities of gas to Serbia this winter,” Vucic said in a video message posted on social media.

He stressed that Serbia, although a candidate for EU membership, will not change its stance of not imposing sanctions on Russia in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine.

However, after the invasion of Ukraine, Serbia condemned the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, and Vucic had limited bilateral talks with Putin.

During the first direct phone conversation with Putin since May 2022, Vucic reiterated that Serbia will not change its position, so it will refrain from taking sanctions against Russia in the context of the Ukrainian conflict.

“Serbia will not impose sanctions on the Russian Federation. That will not change,” said Vucic.

For its part, the Kremlin said in a press release that the two leaders expressed their satisfaction with the level of bilateral relations, which are based on “common points, intellectual, cultural and historical”.

“The situation in Ukraine was also discussed. Vladimir Putin expressed his assessment of the development of the special military operation,” the press release added.

The communication took place as Russia awaits an official response to Putin’s September invitation to Vucic to attend the Brics Summit in Kazan from October 22 to 24.

The official reason for the telephone conversation between Vucic and Putin was today’s celebration in Belgrade of the 80th anniversary of liberation from German occupation during the Second World War.
