Six Chinese Air Force Y-20 transport planes landed at Belgrade airport on Saturday morning.
President of Serbia Alexander Vucicwho was confidently re-elected to a second term last week, effectively confirmed the arms delivery that was agreed back in 2019, saying it would present the Serbian military’s “newest pride” on Tuesday or Wednesday.
U.S. officials have previously advised Serbia against acquiring Chinese weapons because integration with the European Union means that its weapons must be compatible with those of Western countries.
Anti-aircraft missile systems HQ-22 (export name – FK-3) were first introduced by China in 2016. They are designed to destroy aircraft, helicopters and other air targets, have a radius of up to 150 km and a range of altitudes from 20 to 27 km.
The HQ-22 has been compared to the US Patriot system and Russian S-300 air defense systems, although it has a shorter range than the more advanced S-300s. Serbia will become the first operator of Chinese missiles in Europe.
