Tens of thousands filled the streets of the Serbian capital Belgrade this evening, taking part in an opposition-organized protest under the slogan “Serbia against violence”. This was the biggest protest in the Balkan country in the last 10 years, the BBC reported.

The demonstrators first gathered in front of the People’s Assembly, and among the crowd were Sarjan Milivojevic from the Democratic Party, the chairman of the People’s Party Vuk Jeremic, the head of the parliamentary group of the People’s Party Miroslav Aleksic, the MP from “We Must-Zaedno” Aleksandar Jovanovic Chuta and others.
The opposition representatives presented several demands for the extraordinary session of the Serbian Parliament on May 18, which will discuss the situation in the country after the two mass shootings in which 17 people – children and young people – were killed.
They demand the resignations of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Bratislav Gasič, and the director of the Security and Information Agency, Aleksandar Vulin, and the withdrawal of the entire Regulatory Authority for the Control of the Work of the Media (REM), which they consider responsible for propagating violence, aggression and immorality on televisions with a national frequency, as well as for the withdrawal of the national frequencies of Pink and Happy televisions, and for the banning of print media for the same reasons.

After the demands were read, the protesters headed towards the Gazelle Bridge and part of the international highway, which were blocked for two hours. People chanted “Vucic, get out” and “Resign,” and one of the banners read: “Turn on your brain, turn off Pink.”
“This is intolerable. So much nonsense, so much injustice and impudence are intolerable and cannot continue,” one of the protesters, Mirko Filipovic, told “Danas”.
The Minister of Transport, Goran Vesic, stated that the blocking of the “Gazela” bridge was an illegal act and a criminal offence.

“Blocking the bridge stopped traffic on our most important international transport corridor. 128,000 cars pass through the Gazelle every day, as well as 1,351 buses on eight lines of public transport, carrying almost 200,000 people. I strongly condemn the actions of those who blocked the bridge,” Vesic added.
