Serbia: Minister resigns over Novi Sad tragedy –

Serbia‘s Minister of Construction, Infrastructure and Transport, Goran Vesic, has tendered his resignation following the tragedy at the Novi Sad railway station last Friday, when the cornice in front of the entrance collapsed, killing 14 people.

At the press conference, Vesic stated that he does not feel responsible, but is resigning for moral reasons. “Neither I nor the people who work with me have the slightest responsibility for the tragedy that happened. After all, this will be proven by the investigation”, said Goran Vesic.

His resignation will be considered tomorrow Tuesday by the Government Council.

Investigations by the Novi Sad prosecutor’s office to lay criminal charges continue with the questioning of officials of state agencies involved in the renovation of the station. Novi Sad railway station was recently renovated and opened in July 2024. The renovation was carried out by a consortium of Chinese companies, which claims that the part of the cornice that collapsed “was not the subject of the reconstruction work”.

In Novi Sad, citizens still come today in front of the place where the tragedy happened, light candles and leave flowers, thus honoring the memory of the victims.
