The prosecuting authorities in Novi Sad, Serbia have launched investigations to establish the causes of the tragedy at the train station that claimed the lives of fourteen people and to assign criminal responsibilities.
It is noted that yesterday (1/11) at noon, the roof extension in front of the entrance to the railway station in Novi Sad collapsed, killing fourteen people and seriously injuring three people.
In Serbia today is a day of mourning, while in the city of Novi Sad mourning will last three days.
The interrogations at the Novi Sad prosecutor’s office began with the statements of high-ranking government officials and top state officials.
Today, as announced, twenty people were called to testify, including the Minister of Construction, Infrastructure and Transport, Goran Vesic, as well as his associates who were involved in the recent reconstruction of the railway station.
The renovation of the train station in Novi Sad took three years, from mid-2021 to July 2024, and the project was carried out by a consortium of Chinese construction companies. The Chinese issued a statement saying that the roof extension that collapsed “was not the subject of works in the framework of the reconstruction of the station”.
The opposition parties argue that the tragedy in Novi Sad is due to the corruption of the state apparatus and the lack of transparency in the awarding of public works, while political responsibilities will also be attributed.
In front of the scene of the tragedy in Novi Sad since last night, citizens have been continuously coming to honor the dead by lighting candles and laying flowers.
