Eight people were killed when the roof of a train station collapsed in the Serbian city of Novi Sad, Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said in a televised statement.
According to an announcement by the authorities, efforts are being made to rescue two other people who are trapped under the ruins and with whom the rescue crews are in contact. Two people were taken to hospital in serious condition, Serbia‘s interior minister said.
Local television stations showed footage of emergency services at the scene, including medical personnel preparing stretchers nearby. Two large excavators to remove the rubble are also parked in front of the station.
“This is an extremely difficult rescue operation that will last for several more hours. We have about 80 rescuers from different cities working and heavy machinery,” Dacic said, adding that two more people were still under the rubble but were alive.
Local media reported that around 30 people were injured.

Citizen complaints
The railway station in Novi Sad has been renovated twice in the last four years, and the inauguration of the station by the president of the Republic, Aleksandar Vučić, took place as many times. The last inauguration took place in July 2024, while the previous inauguration in 2022 was also attended by the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán.
The renovation project was undertaken and executed by a Chinese construction company and there were many complaints from the opposition about opaque conditions during the awarding of the project. Serbian media also report that a month ago, citizens reported to the authorities by name that cracks had appeared in the base where the roof collapsed.
Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic, who is at the train station, said it was a tragic event and said those responsible would be held accountable.
The President of the Republic Aleksandar Vucic will deliver a speech tonight at 20:00.
