Serbia Arrests Alleged Leader of Armed Group Invading Kosovo

Oct 3, 2023 at 8:04 PM Update: 9 minutes ago

Serbia says it has arrested the alleged leader of an armed group that invaded Kosovo a week and a half ago, killing a policewoman.

The man, Milan Radoicic, is said to have led about thirty people. The group attacked Kosovo police and then occupied a monastery for hours. Three attackers were killed in the action.

Radoicic is vice president of a Serbian political party in Kosovo. He admitted a few days after the attack that he was involved in order to “encourage the Serbian people to resist the terrorist regime” of Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti.

Radoicic is currently in custody. According to the Serbian Interior Ministry, police searched his apartment and other belongings.

Tensions in Serbia and Kosovo flared again due to attack

The attack on police in northern Kosovo renewed tensions between Serbia and breakaway Kosovo. Belgrade does not recognize Kosovo’s independence and says it regularly stands up for the rights of the Serb minority in Kosovo, which mainly lives in the north.

Kosovo wants Serbia not to interfere with the young country.

In the late 1990s, Serbia and Kosovo fought a bloody war of independence. The government in Pristina fears that fighting could flare up again and claims that Serbia wants to annex the north of the country.

The United States urged Serbia on Friday to halt its troop build-up on the border. Belgrade said on Monday that the number of troops has already been scaled down to normal levels.
