Prosecutors in Serbia have arrested 11 people in connection with the tragedy at the Novi Sad train station, where 15 people were killed when part of the roof collapsed.
As stated in a statement by the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office of Novi Sad, “there are reasonable suspicions that those arrested are responsible for the collapse of the cornice in the railway station building.”
Serbian public television (RTS) reports that among those arrested is former Minister of Construction, Infrastructure and Transport Goran Vesic, who resigned three days after the tragic event. According to the same source, the director of the Railway Infrastructure Authority (IZS) Jelena Tanaskovic was also arrested.
The prosecutor’s office states that it proceeded with the arrests “after a collection and detailed analysis of all the evidence resulting from the interrogations and the expert opinion carried out.”
For the criminal acts reported by the prosecution, a prison sentence of two to 12 years is provided.
On November 1, 15 people died and two were seriously injured when the concrete canopy above the entrance to the railway station in Novi Sad collapsed. The collapse occurred four months after the station’s three-year reconstruction work was completed.
