Joker: Folie à Deux Receives R-Rating

The Motion Picture Association revealed on Wednesday that the upcoming musical sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux,” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, has been rated R. The film has received the mature rating for “some strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality and brief full nudity,” similar to its predecessor, “Joker,” which also held an R-rating due to “strong bloody violence, disturbing behavior, language and brief sexual images.”

The Cast and Director

Directed by Todd Phillips, “Joker: Folie à Deux” features Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as the title character, alongside Lady Gaga as his twisted lover, Harley Quinn. The film also stars Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener, and Brendan Gleeson, promising a thrilling and star-studded cinematic experience.

A Jukebox Musical with a Twist

While the plot details of “Joker: Folie à Deux” are being tightly guarded, it has been exclusively revealed that the film will predominantly be a jukebox musical. The movie is set to integrate at least 15 reinterpretations of well-known songs, including Judy Garland’s iconic track “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical “The Band Wagon.” Additionally, fans may be treated to a couple of original songs on the film’s soundtrack.

Legacy of Success

After winning the coveted Golden Lion at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, the first film in the “Joker” franchise grossed over $1 billion worldwide and dominated the 2020 Oscars with 11 nominations. Joaquin Phoenix’s riveting portrayal of Arthur Fleck, also known as the Joker, clinched him the Best Actor Oscar. Similarly, Lady Gaga has seamlessly transitioned into the world of cinema with notable performances in critically acclaimed films like “A Star Is Born” and “House of Gucci.” “Shallow,” a chart-topping song from “A Star Is Born,” earned her and her collaborators an Oscars victory for Best Original Song.

Release Date

“Joker: Folie à Deux” is already making waves ahead of its release. Adhering to the gripping and dark nature of its predecessor, the film is set to hit theaters on October 4, presented by Warner Bros. Pictures. Fans of the “Joker” franchise, as well as all those eager for an enthralling musical cinematic experience, won’t have to wait much longer to witness the highly-anticipated story unfold on the big screen.
