Today, September 27, in the Orthodox calendar commemoration day of the holy martyrs Kalistratus and his wife. Kalistratos was a Roman soldier, after learning about Christianity, he decided to accept this religion. He refused to worship pagan gods, and that was the reason for his persecution. Kalistratus showed great courage and patience, continuing to be tortured for his faith.

According to tradition, Kalistratus was not the only one who supported Christianity. He was joined by his companions, who were also soldiers. These heroes, known as “martyrs Calistratus,” showed their loyalty and courage by refusing to abandon the faith of Christ. After several tortures and persecutions, Kalistrat and his soldiers were arrested. They were sentenced to death and suffered severe torture. The martyrdom of Kalistratus and his heroes became a symbol of loyalty and strength of faith.

Church holiday 27 September – the day of remembrance of the Reverend Niall Grothafer

Niall Grothafer was born in the second half of the 14th century to a family that, according to tradition, was from Lithuania or Ukrainian territory. In his youth, Neil decided to devote his life to God and so he became a monk. He lived in deserted places, devoting time to prayer and asceticism.

Niall became the founder of several monasteries, especially the Nilo-Grotafer monastery located in the Chernigov region. The monastery soon became famous for its spiritual practice and ascetic life. Neil was also known as a spiritual guide. He attracted many students to whom he imparted knowledge and experience, calling them to virtue and prayer.

Neil Grothafer also knows victims for his faith. According to legend, he was persecuted because of his Christian beliefs, which confirms his status as a priest.

Traditionally, on this day, peasants removed their barns to warm places for the winter. In addition, the date was considered favorable for selling or buying a horse.
