September 2021, collapse for the car market in Italy

September 2021 ends with a total of 105,175 registrations, very bad numbers, which mark a very high decrease (of 32.7%) compared to the same month of 2020, and of 26.2% on September 2019. The situation is tragic, the market auto is experiencing a really difficult time globally, but the loss in Italy scares the whole sector.

In the first nine months of the year, from January to September 2021, new cars registered totaled 1,165,491, with an increase of 20.6% compared to last year (marked by the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic and the consequent lockdown, with the closure of all activities). Compared to 2019, the 2021 registration numbers have dropped by just over 20%. To date, the collapse is due to different reasons and difficulties that the auto sector has been living for a year and a half now, but the biggest and current problem is the global microchip crisis, which has been talked about for months now.

A situation that is bringing many, too many difficulties to the auto sector. Obviously, the delays in production are enormous and so is the decline in the availability of complete vehicles. It is also for this reason that the cars invoiced and delivered are less and less, they are not ready, the manufacturers are in serious crisis, the parts are missing. Another variable that has greatly affected the negative trend of the market today? Lack of availability of government funds for electric and plug-in cars, which were reset in a short time and were allocated intermittently.

The automotive sector can do nothing but ask the government for help again, there is a need for new incentives. Let us not forget that the relaunch of the entire sector would also increase the GDP beyond the level that was foreseen in the Update of the Def (Economic and Financial Document). If the Executive does not act in this way, unfortunately we will see a situation never seen before for the entire automotive sector. We also need a comprehensive plan for the creation and development of high power charging stations for electric cars throughout Italy.

What are the forecasts? Dataforce Italia expects a total of 1,497,000 registrations for 2021 (still down), which represents an increase of 8.2% on last year, but a significant loss of 22% on 2019.
