Former restaurant tycoon Seppo “Sedu” Koskinen, 66, has confessed to the financial crimes he was accused of.

The prosecutor demanded a two-year suspended sentence and one hundred hours of community service for three accounting crimes, three gross debtor dishonesty and a registry entry crime. The crimes have taken place between 2012 and 2019 in the area of Varsinais-Suomen.

In addition, the prosecutor demanded that Koskinen be banned from doing business.

The events are related to the operations of Namu restaurants, VIP restaurants and Torre Nuevo. Koskinen served as CEO of the companies and as a full member of their boards.

According to the prosecutor, the companies’ operations had been continued by lending money between the companies, even though they were insolvent, loss-making, or closed. False and misleading information had also been entered in the company’s accounting, or the accounting had been completely neglected.

The actions caused damages of hundreds of thousands of euros.

“To take care of the elderly”

The charges were supposed to be heard in the District Court of Varsinais-Suomen already at the beginning of April. However, the matter was transferred to the recognition trial procedure. Koskinen has therefore admitted the crimes.

If the suspect confesses to all the crimes, he gets off with a lighter sentence.

Back in January, Koskinen denied the charges.

According to Turku Sanomat, Koskinen’s punishment has already been agreed to be one hundred hours of community service.

– I would love to go take care of the elderly, he says in Turku Sanom.

According to him, the future community service position has already been agreed upon.

The final verdict in the case will be given on May 3.

Everyone’s known “banknotes”

Sedu Koskinen founded his first restaurant in Turku in 1992.

In the 2000s, he expanded his restaurant operations outside of Turku. Among other things, he opened the Tiger nightclub in Helsinki. Other well-known restaurants he founded were Studio 51 and Lux restaurant.

At most, Koskinen had dozens of restaurants in different parts of Finland. At best, the Onnela chain alone included 12 restaurants at the same time.

In the vernacular, many of the restaurants founded by Koskinen were called “seduloi”.

The million-dollar business turned loss-making in the 2010s. Namu restaurants were declared bankrupt in November 2018. VIP restaurants and Torre Nuevo experienced the same fate the following fall.
