The high word came out on Tuesday: the Tokyo Olympics will not be held in 2020. With that, the International Olympic Committee was one of the last organizations to inevitably conclude that no one can be immune to the coronavirus.
Why did the IOC hesitate so long? German investigative journalist Hajo Seppelt has no good word for it. “Thomas Bach and some besides him have done enormous damage to the IOC.”

Seppelt is the headache of the powerful international sports federations. Among other things, he revealed the large-scale Russian doping scandal at the Sochi Winter Games.
Seppelt realizes that the corona crisis is of a completely different order. However, the IOC has also failed in this global crisis. “It was perfectly clear that the Olympic Games in July 2020 had no chance,” Seppelt grumbles.
“The IOC held on to 2020, while they must have known for a long time what the consequences are. They did that over the back of the health of people and athletes. Disgusted.”
