Ham Sang-wook, Deputy Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs, made the announcement during a high-level meeting of the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) held online Wednesday.

CERF was established in 2006 to provide emergency assistance in the event of unforeseen humanitarian crises, such as natural disasters.

During the meeting, the 39 countries, including South Korea, pledged to donate a total of $ 469 million next year, according to the ministry.

Participants shared the importance of the fund amid a growing need for humanitarian assistance due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he added.

South Korea has provided nearly $ 60 million since CERF’s inception.
