Seoul receives the 2022 Smart City award at the Smart City Expo World Congress

The capital of South Korea, Seoul, has been awarded as the Smart City of 2022 in the World Smart City Awards which are given annually by the Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC), which is held at the Fira de Barcelona Gran Via venue until to Friday.

The judging panel, composed of representatives of the Barcelona City Council, UN-Habitat, the World Bank, the European Commission Mission on Climate Change and Smart Cities and Smart City Expo World Congress, awarded the city for its Smart Seoul platform , Fira informed in a statement on Wednesday.

The platform focuses on “digital inclusion policies that guarantee the five basic digital rights: communication, mobility, education, safety and use of technology” and provides digital services adapted to vulnerable people.

Seoul Digital Foundation President Yosik Kang stressed that this award is particularly significant as it honors Seoul’s smart city policy, adding, “We hope this will give strength to Seoul citizens who are suffering after the recent tragedy of Itaewon”.

This year’s edition also awarded Kiev with special recognition “for the use of digital services to save lives in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine that began in February”.

In the Energy and Environment category, the software project developed by the company TerraGo Technologies for the maintenance and implementation of the public lighting network in Chicago was awarded.

In Mobility, the DIGI-V initiative for the digitization of traffic in the city of Wiesbaden, developed by the company Yunex Traffic, was awarded and Dublin received the Governance and Economy award for its drone development project.

Amsterdam saw its cybersecurity game for young people Hackshield awarded in the Security category, and the Inclusion award went to The Global Initiative for inclusive ICT’s (G3ict) Inclusive Sidewalks AI project in Atlanta, and Buenos Aires received the Infrastructure and Construction award for the Ciudad 3D project.

In the Enabling Technologies category, however, the winner was the Belgian city of Bruges for its Smart City Data Platform, in which the cities of Leuven and Roselare also participate.
